During the winter season, many people experience health problems related to the extreme cold. Some of the most common problems are sore throat, nasal congestion, dry skin, chapped lips, and even seasonal affective disorder. Although there are medicines readily available in the market, we should consider natural remedies in order to prevent any side effects.
Honey, Lemon and Ginger Tea For Sore Throat
An inflamed throat can be bothersome, so the moment you experience it you should gargle one teaspoon of lemon juice. Lemon has antibacterial property. You can also make lemon juice and add honey to it. The honey has soothing effect and it makes the taste of the lemon bearable.
Another drink you can make for sore throat is ginger tea. Boil slices of ginger then add honey. This helps loosen mucus thus clearing your throat.
Decongestion
A natural decongestion remedy includes drinking lots of water. Congestion is a result of inflamed nasal passages. By drinking lots of water, the inflammation is reduced significantly.
Steam inhalation also helps relieve congestion.
Remedy for Chapped Lips
This is probably the most common problem during winter. Chapped lips can be remedied by making sure that you are well hydrated. You must drink at least 8-10 glasses of water every day to keep your lips moisturized.
Cucumber can also be used to relieve chapped lips by applying cucumber slices to your lips. Cucumber has 90 percent water which can directly hydrate your lips. It also has ascorbic acid which promotes the production of collagen, a protein and gives resilience to your skin.
Remedy for Dry Skin
Because of the extreme cold, skin easily becomes dry during winter. To treat this problem use a ripe avocado and mash it until it has a paste like consistency. If the skin is very dry you can also add honey to the mixture then apply it on your skin. Avocado has vitamin E that prevents dry skin while the honey aids in keeping the moisture in the skin.
Remedy for Seasonal Affective Disorder
Although the cause of seasonal affective disorder is unclear, it has natural remedies. One of which is eating fruits like apricot, apple, grapefruit, oranges and the like. Fruits help gradually increase serotonin levels. A decrease serotonin level is linked to depression.
When you start to crave for carbohydrates as a result of seasonal affective disorder, take warm broth so you will feel full, preventing you from consuming too much food.
With all these natural remedies you should be able to manage health problems during winter without taking unnecessary medications.
