Ever dress up nice, spray on your favorite perfume, puff up your hair and wear that suit/dress that’s been hanging in your closet for ages? Sure you have, if you don’t live under a rock and have a social life. I went to a party last night, a big fancy one with everyone prettied up, looking glamorous. The hairstyles and the makeup was all great, not that I notice that stuff very often, but I noticed because something struck me. We put an awful lot of effort into our choice of clothes, our hairstyles, caring for our skin, eating healthy, and what not, but don’t you just try puckering our pursing your lips? Does that hurt? Well, I’m pretty sure a lot of you readers will feel a shearing pain in your lips.
Lips, perhaps that most ignored human body part. Our lips are three or four times more sensitive than our skin, but not nearly as cared for. For girls who use lip-gloss, dry and chapped lips are a problem that’s usually kept under wraps, but exposed and untended lips are bound to be damaged in our harsh everyday environment. Rough, cracked, and sensitive lips are hardly anything to smile at. This is a problem especially prominent among guys who couldn’t care less about their lips. However, everyone should realize that chapped lips are avoidable, unnecessary pain, and if that’s not enough motivation for you then you should know that they are very unattractive.
There might be a wide selection of chap sticks out there, but you could also consider some home remedies. Here are two of my favorites:
Chapped Lip Gel
Aloe Vera gel
Geranium essential oil
Chamomile essential oil
- In a small air-tight container, place 2 teaspoons of Aloe Vera gel.
- Add the essential oils, intermittently, while stirring the mixture throughout the process. Make sure that all the ingredients are well-mixed.
- Apply some of the mixture directly onto your lips. Don’t put on too much and avoid ingesting too much of the mixture. Aloe Vera tastes bitter.
- Seal the container and store remaining gel for future use. Make sure that the container is airtight or you may risk oral or facial infections.
Chapped Lip Oil
Olive oil/coconut oil
Lavender essential oil
Lemon essential oil
Geranium essential oil
Chamomile essential oil
- Pour 2 teaspoon of olive oil/ coconut oil into an airtight container. If you are using coconut oil, keep it from going hard with little mixes. You should use olive oil or vegetable or if you are looking for a thin oil, but use a hard oil like coconut for a creamier texture.
- Add the essential oils (5 to 10 drops each), intermittently, while stirring the mixture throughout the process. Make sure that all the ingredients are well-mixed.
- Apply the oil by messaging it with circular motions on your lips and chapped skin.
- Seal the container and store remaining mixture for future use. Make sure that the container is airtight or you may risk oral or facial infections.
Although essential oils are readily available in stores nowadays, you may find yourself in a position where you don’t have one or more essential oils that are included in these recipes. In that case, you can use alternate oils. Neroli and rose essential oils can be used in place of chamomile and lavender quite effectively. You can also use sandalwood essential oil in the place of geranium essential oil. You are welcome to experiment, but make sure that you research the properties of each oil before you use it. Whatever you do, keep the ration of the oils to the aloe vera or the carrier oil the same every time.
You might be tempted to use extra oil in your mixture, but that might back-fire. When working with these oils, be wary of allergic reactions and possible health risks of too high an oil concentration in the mixtures. Keeping the carrier to oil ration will also ensure that the consistency over different batches of the mixture remains unchanged. To make larger batches, use a larger amount of the ingredients, but maintain the ratios and store the mixtures in cool dark locations, in airtight containers.
