We’ve all had them, at one time or another. We have woken up in the middle of the night, with wide eyes, feeling clammy. We have looked around hesitantly, perhaps turned on the lights, to regain a sense of security. I speak, of course, of nightmares. Rarely tolerable, these little pieces of hell can get a hold of our emotional and psychological well being upon prolonged exposure. So how exactly are we supposed to stop or at least allay nightmares?
The following three herbs are powerful natural remedies for nightmares. Here they are:
Chamomile: Nightmares have been found to be closely related to what goes on inside our bodies. Physiological turmoil can often translate to neural signals which equal to a somnolent horror movie. Digestion or indigestion more appropriately could stimulate this process. Mild food allergies or an over worked digestive system can be soothed by chamomile tea. It’s more effective than most would think. Chamomile is also a terrific tension and stress reliever. It won’t make you drowsy (unless you drink 10 cups of the tea); it will give you just enough inner calm to have a nightmare-less night.
Herbal teas are a well respected natural way to alleviate bodily discomforts or ailments in a safe and side effect free way. Tea is just about the only way you can take chamomile.
Sage: Gorgeous in potpourri, an established soother of sore throats, and an analgesic for migraines, sage needs little introduction. This well known herb has multi-dimensional properties and curing nightmares is one of them.
The next thing I am going to say is common knowledge to most women. Painful menstrual periods and excessive milk flow during nursing have been kept at bay by sage in the past. It is also highly effective in avoiding nightmares during pregnancy and menopausal hot flashes. The herb temporarily eases the effects of hormonal imbalances and fluctuations – no wonder many women love it. Take it in the form of a tea or an infusion.
Valerian: This herb is one of the most powerful natural sedatives in existence. It is well known for its ability to promote healthy sleeping patterns. It will relax your muscles and mind and ready you for a peaceful sleep. Side effects commonly associated with prescription medication are also avoided.
Administration
All three herbs may be ingested in the form of teas or infusions. There are companies out there that sell herbal teas, but I prefer making my own. Although this is more tedious, it has value. Making your own tea is like making an effort. You’re actively trying to get away from your nightmares. The psychological effects of thinking in this manner are underestimated.
You could also use fragrant leaves; add extra ingredients like lemon juice or ginger mix up herbs rather than simply making single herb teas. Make it a game, a fun game to get rid of your nightmares.
Realization
The herbs are powerful, but they are not magic. Nightmares may be caused due to post traumatic stress disorder or other long term conditions, but they can also be instigated by poor diet and stress. Eat healthy foods, avoid alcohol and caffeine before sleeping, and try to stay relaxed.
