No, this isn’t the movies, this is real life and sometimes real life means real life bed bugs. No denying, bed bugs are disgusting, and it would be nice to imagine that bed bugs are just an urban legend.
But bed bugs are very real. In fact bed bugs are a big problem in the U.S. When the CDC starts issuing bed bug control measures, which it did in 2010, you know bed bugs are becoming a serious issue. It is not clear what has caused the resurgence of this despised insect, but many people believe population surges in urban areas are to be blamed.
There are many myths associated with bed bugs. Misunderstanding their behavior could make you a prime target. You should know that bed bugs are not necessarily attracted to dirty environments. In fact, they are actually more attracted to clean bedding. Also, bed bugs are not just attracted to beds. They can feel right at home in carpeting, drapes and luggage.
Some areas have experienced infestations to such a degree that powerful chemical treatments seemed to have been the only answer. If, however, you have a mild bed bug problem, or, better yet, you want to prevent a future problem, there are many natural ways to discourage these parasites.
Non-permeable mattress and pillow covers are a great place to start the fight against bed bugs. Bed bugs like to hide in bedding. This is easy to do in the thick fibers of the material covering most mattresses. A non-permeable mattress cover literally gives the pest nowhere to hide. This is also a good measure to take when traveling if you are scared of picking up bed bugs from another location.
Bed bugs do not like heat. If you suspect bed bugs have taken up residence, you should run all of your bedding through several cycles in your dryer on the hottest setting. You can use steam on your mattress, drapes or carpeting to rid it of any bed bugs that could be hiding there. Over the course of a week, use the following strategy: vacuum the areas thoroughly and then go over it with the hand held steamer.
Lavender is probably the handiest of herbs. Its uses can include cooking, aromatherapy, and it repels countless pests, including bed bugs. A lavender bed bug spray is easy to whip up, but keep in mind that this is more of an overnight solution if you are staying away from home and you suspect there may be bed bugs about. Mix 4 drops of lavender essential oil with 4 ounces of water. You can spray the mixture directly onto bedding and surrounding carpet. You can also add the lavender mixture into the last rinse cycle of your wash containing your pajamas to discourage bed bugs from coming near you while you sleep.
