Today, a lot is being said regarding how corrosive fluoride containing toothpastes are for our teeth. It has been claimed that the fluoride could actually cause enamel deterioration with long term use. In other words, fluoride containing toothpastes seem to be doing us more harm than good. Well the problem is that 9 out of 10 toothpastes on the market contain fluoride.
What options does that leave for the customers? None, except from maybe falling in the trap of the many manufacturers who all claim to have “the right product for you”. In the meantime, there is something that you can surely not go wrong with: going natural. In this article, we will show you different recipes, to make your own natural toothpaste.
Coconut Oil Delight
Coconut has a lot of antiseptic properties, and as a matter of fact it is a common ingredient in cosmetic and personal care products such as soaps and shampoos. For this recipe, you will need coconut oil (1/2 a cup), baking soda for whitening purposes (2-3 tablespoons), two small packets of stevia powder for the sweet taste (mandatory, if you want this toothpaste to be “kids-approved”!) essential oils such as peppermint or cinnamon (use about 15-20 drops, for flavoring). You could also add some Grapefruit extract oil for additional flavoring, and a few drops of Myrrh Oil. Myrrh Oil possesses anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, which keeps your mouth even healthier.
If you are using hardened coconut oil, you will need to melt it first. Next, mix all the ingredients until you obtain a perfect blend. That’s all! Yes, as simple as that! Put your homemade toothpaste in a jar, and let it cool completely. To use your toothpaste, simply dip your toothbrush in the jar.
Peppermint Pleasure
Another recipe for natural homemade toothpaste includes peppermint extract (or peppermint essential oil), baking soda and some sea salt. Remember, the key ingredient here is baking soda, as this is what works as your natural whitening agent. Peppermint also plays a crucial role: it refreshes your breath (this is one of the effects we always look forward to when brushing our teeth, don’t we?) fights bacteria and also help keeping your sinuses clean and clear!
Mix all the ingredients and “gradually” add water until you reach the desired consistency. Your toothpaste will probably have a snow white color and a granular appearance, which is fine!
Glycerin-based Toothpaste
Glycerin could also be used for your DIY toothpaste. You will need Glycerin (about 10teaspoons), baking soda (three teaspoons), a pinch of salt, some water to adjust the consistency and some peppermint extract to your taste, for additional freshness. In this recipe, there is no need to add a sweetening agent (such as stevia for example), given that glycerin on its own is already sweet. Mix all the ingredients together and add water until you obtain the desired consistency (that is, a thick enough paste).
Remember to keep the lids of your homemade toothpastes sealed, for health purposes.
