3 Herbs for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The truth is that IBS is more common than the majority of people would think. This is a condition that results in gassiness, pain, cramps, changes in the bowel movements, and bloating. Although the symptoms may seem quite bothersome, the good news is that there are some herbal remedies for irritable bowel syndrome.

Peppermint as one of the treatment options

If you use peppermint oil capsules, you could make the symptoms of the condition better. You can expect the pain, bloating and gassiness to get better. It is best to opt for the capsules that come with enteric coating. This is because these kinds of capsules can pass through the stomach without being digested and they can reach the intestines.

Although peppermint oil is good for the intestines, it is important for the capsules not to be digested. This is because if the oil got in the stomach, negative side effects would incur, such as heartburn. In case you would like to soothe the intestines, you may also consider dill and fennel.

You should prepare a tea of these herbs. They are often used in case of colicky babies in order to calm them down and to make gassiness and bloating better for them. If the herbs work in case of babies, for sure they will work in case of adults as well.

Ginger

It is a known fact that ginger can help with digestion and it can soothe the stomach. In the same time you can use ginger to make nausea, motion sickness, morning sickness, and indigestion better. However, you should also know that in some rare cases ginger can also lead to heartburn.

There are many different ways for you to use ginger. For instance, you could add it to boiling water and drink the tea. Another option is to add ginger to your food. For instance you could have salad dressings with ginger or simply add it to cold dishes.

Another kind of herbal remedy that you can use by adding it to your diet is cinnamon. There are a lot of different uses for cinnamon. Some people add it to their tea, while others use it as seasoning. It is good for preventing diarrhea while it can lower cholesterol and it can keep the blood sugar level stable.

Anise or aniseed

This herb tastes something like licorice. If you have anise you can prevent gas formation. You should prepare anise tea by adding only two seeds. Crush the seeds and add them to a cup of boiling water. Then place a saucer over the cup to trap the volatile oils of the herb.

You should drink the tea after 5 minutes while it is still hot. It is best to have the tea before meals so that it will stop painful gas formation in the intestines which are usually caused by carbohydrates, green foods, and legumes.

There are many different herbs that treat irritable bowel syndrome and you will have to try several of them until you find those that work for you.
