Tea tree oil is the oil retrieved from the tea tree also known as the Melaleuca tree. For thousands of years native people of many lands understood the value of tea tree oil. Aboriginal people in what is now Wales, would use the tea tree oil in poultices for respiratory problems. It was also used topically to disinfect wounds.
The modern world discovered the usefulness of tea tree in oil in 1920s when Arthur Penfold discovered that the disinfectant properties of tea tree oil were stronger than that of the commonly used carbolic acid. For a few decades tea tree oil enjoyed popularity as an effective, safe, all natural alternative to commercial antiseptics. Unfortunately, it fell out of use in the 60s but has been growing in popularity over the last several years.
Acne
Acne is not only painful, but also embarrassing. People will spend thousands of dollars trying to cure this annoying problem. Tea tree oil contains very strong anti-microbial properties, which basically means it kill bacteria. Because of this it has been found to pretty effectively treat mild to moderate acne. Studies in Australia have found that although initially it took a bit longer to see results with tea tree oil, over time this natural remedy was more effective and had fewer side effects than over the counter acne medications. Undiluted tea tree oil should not be applied directly to skin, though. For acne treatment you should dilute 5 mL of tea tree oil with 95 mL of water.
Nail Fungus
Anyone who has suffered from nail fungus understands just how stubborn these ailments can be. Not to mention you can’t wear cute sandals when your toe nails are embarrassing you. Tea tree oil is a wonderful alternative to over the counter, chemical solutions. For toe nail fungus you will need to clean and dry the area thoroughly. You can apply undiluted tea tree oil to toe nails unless you notice irritation. If you do notice irritation, dilute the oil slightly. Be consistent with applications in order to see results.
Respiratory Infections
The antibacterial properties of tea tree oil can also be used to combat the symptoms of respiratory infections. It is also safe to use if you are on prescription antibiotics. To relieve the symptoms of a respiratory infection you should bring a large pot of water to a boil. When it begins to boil, remove from heat and add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil. Cover your head with a towel, lean over the steaming pot and inhale the tea tree vapors. This treatment can help alleviate congestion, sore throat and runny nose.
Dandruff
An unhealthy scalp can really affect your confidence. Products to improve your scalps’ health can get really expensive, though. Tea tree oil is fairly inexpensive way to treat many scalp issues.
