We all are well aware of side effects of using petroleum products. All sorts of skin care products contain one form of the petroleum products or the other. As a person who wants to avoid it as much as possible, I decided to come up with an alternative, Coconut oil arnica salve. The base to make these salves is coconut oil and beeswax.
You need the following to start off:
1) 1 cups coconut oil
2) .3 ounces dried arnica Montana flowers
3) ¼ cup beeswax granules (scant)
4) 1/8 tsp. peppermint essential oil (optional)
5) 1/8 tsp. lavender essential oil (optional)
6) A double boiler or crock pot
7) old cotton t-shirt or cotton pillowcase
8) Bowl, Mason jar, etc.
9) Whisk
Directions:
To start off, whiz the arnica in a food processor so that the flowers start bruising and the infusion in coconut oil happens faster.
Soak the arnica flowers in 2 cups of coconut oil for about 12-24 hours. Keep the stove on the lowest as the flowers steep in a double boiler.
Make sure the arnica flowers are completely covered in the oil and the solution does not get too hot.
After the process is complete, let the mixture cool for an hour or two.
Place cloth over the bowl and strain the herbs out.
Put the filtered oil back and turn the heat on low.
Next, add beeswax and whisk the mixture until it dissolves completely. ¼ cup of beeswax will result in a considerably soft salve. The more beeswax you add, the softer the salve will be.
After the Beeswax is melted, remove from heat and cool for an hour or so.
Next, pour in the essential oils and store the salve in whatever containers you want.
The Salve is great to treat tired, aching muscles, arthritis sprains etc.
